Fifth Wall

Using Art to Drive Climate Action and Innovation

Fifth Wall, a Certified B Corporation, is the largest venture capital firm focused on technology-driven innovation for the built environment. As real estate is responsible for 30% of greenhouse gas emissions and consumes 40% of the world’s energy, they decided to launch a Climate Tech fund to invest in technology that decarbonizes the industry. The new fund will invest in start-ups working to lower the environmental impact of the full lifecycle of a building: from construction, to building management and building tear down.

To launch this fund, BBMG was tasked in creating a campaign to stop people in their tracks and make them aware of the real estate industry’s role in the climate crisis and the imperative to drive significant investment into climate tech innovation.

To break through at major climate conferences, we designed a series of murals that poked fun at billionaires competing in the race to space, a phenomenon that was grabbing media attention and making headlines worldwide.

NYC: Collaboration with Steffi Lynn

For the first mural at Climate Week in New York we posed the question “Before building on other planets, shouldn’t we clean up our own?” which was interpreted into a colorful, high-energy, and optimistic world by NYC-based Artist, Steffi Lynn. For the mural, Steffi used environmentally conscious materials, including using Graphenstone paint as a base coat, which absorbs carbon after it dries.

LA: Collaboration with Ken Yoshimura

For the second mural of the series, we partnered with LA-based artist Ken Yoshimura. Painted for the Milken Conference in LA, the mural invited viewers to both think literally and figuratively about “What planet are you on?”

Glasgow: Collaboration with Rogue One

For the final installation of the series at United Nation’s COP26 in Glasgow we partnered with well-known local street artist, Bobby McNamara aka Rogue One for a stunning visual of an astronaut on Mars feeling a bit homesick with the headline “There’s no place like home” to remind global and business leaders attending the conference that we only have one home, planet Earth, and encourage them to set ambitious goals and bring awareness about decarbonizing the real estate industry.

"BBMG was a pleasure to work with. They understood our creative vision and helped us think even bigger, and the result was A+. On top of that, their entire team was organized, objective-driven, and fun to be around."
